Una buena idea para comenzar: colecciona! (A good idea to start: collect!)

Según la RAE, un álbum es:

"Libro en blanco comúnmente apaisado, y encuadernado con más o menos lujo, cuyas hojas se llenan con breves composiciones literarias, sentencias, máximas, piezas de música, firmas, retratos, etc".

¿Y por qué no en ese etc pueden estar incluidos hongos? Mi profesora favorita en mis estudios de pregrado, Martha Cárdenas (ella me presentó por primera vez este mundo maravilloso), nos propuso una tarea durante el curso: ¡un álbum de hongos!

Por más estrafalaria que suene esta idea, llevada a cabo de una manera adecuada, para mí, es una de las mejores formas de acercarse a un tema y generar un estudio autónomo sobre el mismo. De cada hongo que observábamos en clase debíamos hacer un dibujo y agregar una breve descripción del mismo, incluidos datos que llamaran nuestra atención. Esto hizo que poco a poco llenara las páginas de una pequeña libreta, como si de una gran coleccionista se tratara, haciendo casi imposible que toda la información allí descrita se borrara de mi memoria. Sentía como si mi voz interna dijera "son mis hongos, los hongos que he vivido por mi propia experiencia".

Así que así seas ya todo un micólogo o estés dando tus primeros pasos en este universo, te recomiendo que lo intentes, ya que creo que el resultado puede sorprenderte. Si no eres hábil manualmente, o crees que no tienes habilidad para dibujar, no es una excusa porque este álbum no tiene por qué ser expuesto en un museo, solo cumplir una función como una especie de bitácora sobre tu propia observación y trabajo investigativo. Más bien, dale una oportunidad a acercarte a un área del conocimiento determinada a partir de tu día a día, de lo que vives y has vivido y tu propia y única curiosidad.

Definition of "album" by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary online:

"A book with blank pages used for making a collection (as of autographs, stamps, coins or photographs)."

Why not albums for fungi?

My favorite Professor, Martha Cardenas, during my bachelor degree (who introduced me to this amazing world of mycology) ask us to make an assignment: a mycological album.

It may seem not a sane proposal but, if you take this task seriously and in a proper manner, albums could be a great way to approach a new topic and developing autonomous research skills.

So, from every fungus that we observed (in the lab or in the field) we were asked to draw it and add a very simple description or random information about that species or genera that caught our attention. And without noticing it I was filling the pages of this notebook like a great collector, making me feel so proud that I cannot easily forget the information that is compressed in this tiny object. I felt like an inner voice saying “this are my fungi, the ones that that I have experienced with my own eyes.”

Therefore, if you are already a well formed mycologist or you are giving baby steps in this universe I would recommend that you should try to make your own mycological album. If you feel that you are not good at drawing or any kind of craftwork, that is not an excuse. This notebook is only yours and It is not particularly made to exhibit it in a museum so relax, have fun and realize that this is an element to serve one’s apprenticeship, like a ship’s log of your observational and investigative work. Go on, give it a chance and learn about anything that you feel interested of passionate about on daily basis, of what you live, what you experienced in the past, and your unique curiosity.
