Un congreso, una ilusión (A congress, an ilusion)

Asistir a congresos es algo que a los que estamos en un ambiente científico no nos es indiferente. Tienes muchas posibilidades para acudir a uno de estos eventos, ya sea como asistente, con un póster, y si tienes suerte y con mucho trabajo duro, tal vez puedas dar una presentación oral.
Este verano tuve la oportunidad de ir al IX Congreso Latinoamericano de Micología en Lima, Perú, donde pude presentar una parte de los resultados de mi tesis de pregrado en la modalidad de póster.
Es increíble qué tan emocionada me sentía de estar allí, pues es de esperarse que si trabajas con micología un evento de estos debe ponerte en este estado: charlas, seminarios, pósteres de diferentes temas y enfoques, y otros estudiantes y profesionales con los cuales generas un vínculo por la similitud de intereses. Además, si tienes suerte, muchos de los investigadores que más te inspiran estarán a unos cuantos metros de tus ojos.

Este congreso es en especial importante ya que en Latinoamérica el campo de la micología está aún muy inexplorado (más en algunos países que en otros) y la información muchas veces no es tan asequible. Por lo cual, el significado de este evento para esta región del planeta es de vital importancia para generar lazos y puentes para ayudarnos unos a otros en las difíciles condiciones de la región para investigar, conseguir financiación y cualquier otro tipo de apoyo.
Siempre quise conocer al PhD Esteban Sir ya que su trabajo en la familia Xylariaceae Argentina solo me atrevería a compararlo con grandes micólogos exploradores del siglo XX. Su amabilidad y pasión por lo que hace son evidentes y me inspiró a seguir luchando por mis aspiraciones y por darme este ánimo le estaré siempre agradecida.

Finalmente quiero añadir que asistan a congresos, recuerden por qué decidieron seguir el camino del conocimiento que escogieron y generen lazos académicos y personales que difícilmente se pueden crear en otra ocasión.
Assisting to a Congress is something that anyone within the academic environment can relate to. You have many possibilities to come to one of these events, either as an assistant, with a poster or if you are lucky and a hard-worker you could perform an oral presentation.
This summer I had the opportunity to travel to Lima, Peru, to presence the IX Latin American Congress of Mycology. Here I presented a poster of some of the results obtained on my bachelor thesis project.
It is amazing how excited I felt to be there, and if your research interests are related to mycology you know there is no other way to react to this situation: conferences, talks, seminars, posters of all kind of similar topics, meeting other students and professionals that you feel bonded to just for having an interest in common. Additionally, if you are lucky enough, a bunch of researchers that you deeply admire are there in front of your eyes.
This Congress is peculiarly important due to the field of mycology in Latin America (more unexplored in some countries than others) and in many times the information is not easily shared. The significance of this event relies on generating bonds and bridges to help each other to do research, achieve funding and any other kind of support, with all the difficulties that our countries embrace for scientific development.
Personally, I always wanted to meet the PhD Esteban Sir because I think that his work on the Xylariaceae family in Argentina is only comparable to some of the papers and books from some great mycology explorers of the last century. His kindness and passion for his research are extremely visible and he inspired me to keep fighting and catching opportunities to follow my aspirations. For this and more I will always feel grateful for having the chance of speak with him.

Finally, I would recommend you to go to congresses so you have the occasion to remember why you chose to follow a path in your specific matter and make new academic and personal bonds that not with easy could be created in any other place.
